One
of the chief missions of Radio CPR is to provide the space and
an outlet for voices rarely heard at great length in the mainstream
media or within traditional forums of civic engagement. Since
our first broadcast in 1998, Radio CPR has opened up our studios
to a diverse array of neighborhood residents for public affairs
programs around local issues:
* Youth from the Marthas Table Teen program planned and ran their
own radio show and learned production skills.
* A group of Asian
American teens and a youth worker broadcast a weekly show featuring
commentaries, Vietnamese music and interviews
* Bell Multicultural High School students recorded and broadcast
commentaries about issues that directly impact them
* Outreach workers from the Whitman Walker Clinic broadcast HIV
prevention public service announcements aimed at Latino teens
through a Latin Rock show
* Social Workers from My Sisters Place discussed their work with
domestic violence victims and how the community can come together
to address this issue
* Youth from the Youth Action Research Group produced a weekly
show featuring commentary and interviews with local housing activists
including a tenants group from Trinity Towers, residents of La
Casa shelter and organizers from WISH
* Youth from Sol y Souls Spoken Resistance shared spoken word
performances and poetry DJ Carlitos Brown broadcast interviews
with Bancroft Elementary School Students about peace and justice,
art and basketball
* Youth workers from Calvary, LAYC, YARG and Asian American Lead
have been interviewed on radio CPR about the joys and challenges
of working with young people
* Tenant organizers from local associations shared challenges
tactics for effective organizing in Section 8 housing
* Immigrant rights workers educated listeners about the impact
of the 1996 legislation on the lives of the citys immigrant residents
