Begin Live Transmission
Begin Live Transmission documents the dream for a small-scale community radio station in a multi-ethnic Washington, D.C. neighborhood. With over 20 songs from D.C. bands, interspersed with interviews and excerpts from radio broadcasts, the CD sounds like one of the station's radio broadcast and represents what community-powered radio could be: diverse, raw, thought-provoking, and exciting. The accompanying 16-page, full-color booklet explains why local residents wanted their own radio station, and provides a history of the project. Nationwide, independent voices are increasingly lost through concentration of corporate media ownership. And at the local level in Washington, D.C., many voices are excluded from an urban development process that marginalizes and sometimes even demonizes many residents - particularly youth, immigrants, people of color, renters and those who earn under $30,000 a year. A neighborhood radio station like the one documented here provides a place for those whose opinions are typically unheard, and whose cultural expression goes unnoticed.

The bands presented on this CD represent a range of current music D.C. has to offer, including punk, hip-hop, Go-Go, soul, electronica, neo-rockabilly, and Latin rock. Dischord recording artists El Guapo are featured here, as well as many members of established Dischord acts, such as All-Scars and Fugazi.
